Language-Based Curriculum Overview

Our program utilizes phonics-based instruction and emphasizes multi-sensory teaching, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning opportunities. Instruction begins by focusing on the structure of language and gradually moves toward reading.

Our language-based curriculum includes three, 45-minute periods of literacy instruction daily, including language, written expression, and reading.

Curriculum Overview by Grade Level

Lower School (Grades K-4)

Our Lower School programs are carefully designed to build foundational reading, writing and math skills, while also nurturing each student’s creativity, imagination, and confidence. This critical period of learning lays the groundwork for future cognitive and social development. Customized academic paths support each child’s growth, building upon strengths and addressing areas of challenge.

Middle School (Grades 5-8)

Our Middle School programs are carefully designed to further students’ literacy and math abilities while continuing to incorporate academic strengths and personal interests. Middle School students work to develop more abstract, critical thinking skills as well as increased awareness of work production and executive function skills. 

Social and emotional development at this age is critical and we work to promote self-awareness, positive self-image, respect for differences, and an appreciation of the larger community.

Upper School (Grades 9-12)

The Cambridge Upper School takes a distinctive and engaging approach to teaching high school level college preparatory coursework. Housed in its own 2-story building on the Cambridge campus,  the US provides a rigorous curriculum that helps students develop advanced academic skills and stimulate intellectual curiosity. Cambridge teachers effectively support twice-exceptional students by addressing their learning challenges while also fostering their strengths. To complement their academic coursework, students choose from a variety of electives, including performing and visual arts, athletics, home economics, or technology. 

College Placement:
The college placement program is a highlight of our supportive Upper School community. The students’ postsecondary planning is integrated into the curriculum beginning in ninth grade. The classroom pathway goes from Metacognition, to Careers, to Exporations, and culminates with Senior Capstone. The goal of each course is to find what brings each student joy, encourage them to find opportunities to explore that emotion, and to identify pathways to postsecondary success. The Cambridge Upper School is proud of its 100% college placement.
